The Cash Visibility Initiative aims to enhance the efficiency of the cash supply chain by adopting standardized logistics and tracking concepts. These standards allow for seamless integration of process and information flows among all participants, including manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, and end users.

The initiative started through a collaboration between the Federal Reserve’s Cash Product Office (CPO), the top 15 cash-handling banks, the top 5 armored carriers, and a representative from the Independent Armored Car Association. Thye initiatied a business case to evaluate the benefits of creating a standardized framework for data sharing about cash packages which led to the development of these standards.

Participation is not mandatory. However, organizations that choose to participate may benefit from improved business processes, access to certain business partners, and value-added services, thanks to standardized data communications.

Participating organizations can leverage package tracking capabilities within their inventory management systems, driving the adoption of data standards and creating an integrated, efficient cash supply chain. This can lead to enhanced operational efficiencies and better business opportunities.

A cash supply chain functions similarly to any other supply chain, involving the production and distribution of a commodity—in this case, cash. Key participants include the Federal Reserve, financial institutions, depository intitutions, armored carriers, and merchants, all of whom play vital roles in the distribution of cash.
